Names and Meanings

In Africa, history has played a significant role in nation building and also establishing a cultural identity. In Ghana specifically, every individual’s local name has a meaning attached to it, be it from historical lineage or based on particular lesson. I belong to the Ewe tribe, a tribe traced from the ancient ruler King Agorkorli. “Sedeka”is my name meaning “God only son”. This name was given to me by my parents wishing me a good fortune. A name defines the way one should be adressed. Other names include Mawuli (God is Alive), Emefa ( It is cold), Nutifafa (calmness) , the names are backed by a story or good luck wished on children.
